Here’s (possibly) the first of Scarlett’s drawings to be published - in our local paper the Clitheroe Advertiser as part of a campaign to save the Abbey Corn Mills from demolition.

A wobbly black pen drawing on white paper, lovingly framed by our mum in a grey frame with gold edge. We are looking along a cobbled lane into the corn mills, which has stone buildings on either side with a bridge bit between them and a wooden clad sheddy section. Through the bridge bit there are beech trees (I know because I was there, not because this child was good at drawing trees). A black cat is slinking across the cobbles. True to form, Scarlett’s paid more attention to the Blackletter lettering on a sign saying Abbey Corn Mills than to the perspective which is a bit laid back and loose.

And here’s the first words of Sophie’s to be published, from the same year.

A poem in an anthology of children’s poetry. It’s called Pointing and it goes: The woman is thin. Pointing to what could be; Anything, up in the sky; Pointing with all of her body; her feet; her waist; her hair; all the way up to her finger; large and motionless. What is she pointing at? Nobody knows; her expression shows; want and need facing upwards; her dress long and thin; her hair hanging, poised; waiting for something to happen; something terrible? Something wonderful? Something historic? Something special? Her hands were; big and lumpy; one pointing; one clutching her heart. At the end it says “Sophie Rickard (9), Whalley CE Primary School, Whalley, Blackburn, Lancs.
The front cover of Cadbury’s Seventh Book of Children’s Poetry, which is deep purple like a chocolate bar with a fun child’s painting of a day out in a safari park. Some people are driving through a green landscape with giraffe and lions and sheep (worryingly in the same enclosure) in a red car.

It’s funny (and incredibly on brand) that we’ve been drawing mills, campaigning and writing weirdly intense stuff about women since 1989.

The two of us as children. Scarlett (older, long dark brown hair with a fringe, fetching brown velour jumper and light blue tracksuit bottoms) is carrying Sophie (younger, smaller, with blonde hair with a fringe under a red bandana, wearing thick woollen navy blue tights) on her back dangerously in our grandparents’ dining room.
