Museum of Portable Sound

The Thomson Lyra (1999) was one of the earliest MP3 players, and the first digital audio player that could be upgraded via software downloads. Originally released in the US by RCA, the Lyra RD2201 seen in the advert below came with a 32MB Compact Flash card.

For a 1999 magazine advert, the image here is decidedly conservative. A bland pinkish-grey digital device with a tiny black and white LCD screen is shown slightly cocked at an angle above a pair of cheap headphones. A headline reads "THOMSON LYRA" and below that, the only interesting/humorous portion of the design is that it says "mp3 digital player" – but the "3" in "mp3" is superscripted to make it look like it reads "mp to-the-third-power" like a mathematical expression which is, in this context, utterly meaningless and frankly, a little embarrassing.
