Due to the way the Fediverse works, it's a good idea to have at least some followers (even a handful!) before you post interesting content. If you post stuff when you have literally zero followers, that content will usually not be visible outside your server, even if people follow you later.

There's more info on why this situation exists here:

One workaround is to pin posts on your profile, pinned posts are visible to everyone:

@FediTips Maybe this is an unpopular way of using social media, but I don’t like having followers. My timeline is really just a journal that I like to look back though occasionally, and if you want to see what I’m interested in and thinking about you can look at my profile and see. Too often people follow because of something I commented, but what I comment and what I post are completely different

@odd @FediTips

I'm nearly certain you can turn followers off completely. I know you can moderate them.

@teledyn @FediTips I had that on for a while, but it would notify me every single time someone tried to follow. I just turned it off, and purge the follow list occasionally

If you're using the web interface, you can customise the notifications so that it doesn't alert you to follow requests. Click on the slider icon in the top right corner of the notifications column.

@FediTips @teledyn I… did not know that. Thanks!
